I liked the title...........
This is a result of what happens when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere, on a train in India, with a camera......
The title of this entry is a familiar saying in the US.....an idiom used when you stop moving suddenly due to fear or because of a strange noise or something else that caused alarm.

Things started off very well in fact......... a timely departure and the normal routine stops at stations along the way, but just after we pushed through into Rajasthan, the train came to a sudden halt.....very sudden! After sitting in my seat for approximately 10 minutes and watching "train people" rushing in and about through our car, I asked my colleague to inquire as to what the situation was.....rumors began floating that someone had pulled the "Emergency Brake" in another car.....yes, can you believe that such things exist....he pointed them out to me in our car.....there are four of them...two on each side to only be used in the event of an EMERGENCY.....from the looks of the chains in our car.....they are obviously seldom used by anyone....so what was this about...must really be something serious.

I wasn't the only curious passenger. The train Shatabdi, which means "EXPRESS",is traditionally filled with many expat passengers since Jaipur is a very popular tourist destination. I had my seat at the windows, and despite the opaqueness caused by the filth and grime on the outside....and perhaps the inside as well, I could see people walking outside the car.....pointing to a few cars back and speaking in Hindi.....of course I could not understand a word.

After settling back in my chair for what seemed like 10 minutes or so...we had again stopped...what now????? At this point we were already running behind schedule approximately one half hour.....which was no big deal.....I spent the time making the usual pone calls, sending emails on my Blackberry...the normal stuff one would do when working....more time passed.....and more....and more.....

Had our train stopped again for some type of EMERGENCY? Was this a prank of some sort? We later learned that there was no emergency, nor had anyone "pulled the cord" as it was rumored earlier.....but that there was indeed a mechanical failure in the braking mechanism and it was causing some issue.

You can guess the rest of the story......and you certainly know the ending.....I hope you enjoy the pictures I took while "Stopped Dead in my Tracks".

On November 30th, I traveled by train to Jaipur on business.....it wasn't the best trip that I have had due to several delays......what is normally a 4 hour trip turned into an 8 hour journey.

When I finally reached Jaipur's station, it was 2:00pm.....half of my day was already blown....normally I arrive at the station at 10:30am......hop right in the car that is waiting for me.....and never truly have time to explore or see things happening except through the windows of the taxi.

By 2:00pm in the afternoon, I am usually busy working inside one hotel or another.....never getting a chance to see what life is like at that time of the day.

It was definitely time for a quick nap for many of the Rickshaw Drivers.....but I can't blame them.....they work very hard.......very long hours.....it seems like a tough job....

Most Hindus believe that one’s life is not complete unless they have bathed in the waters of the Ganges at least once in their lifetime.

At the crossing of the river we used, boats lined the shores eager to take those wanting to bathe, out into the depths of the river. These boats were for hire specifically to help those wanting to carry out this pilgrimage.

Elephants enjoy a long and varied history in India.....it is an easy claim that the elephant and India are synonymous with one another. They have earned a place of respect in the fabric of India.....a timeline that dates back at least 5000 years.

They were the preferred transportation of many of the Maharajah's......their size alone commands attention and respect.....for standing alongside it is easy to feel like a little person, regardless of your stature in society.

Her name is "Larlee".....while I am not sure of the spelling, it is phonetically correct.....she is 30 years old, eats the stripped leaves from the sugar cane stalks and will live until she is around 80 years old.

So what did we see on our journey......monkeys, birds, lots of deer.....some spent antlers from a season ago.....and some tiger tracks.

Preston was out of school this past week, as the American School follows the US holiday schedule and people back in the states were celebrating Thanksgiving.

The hotel we stayed at arranged for a guide to take us to one of the two rivers available to us the Kosi and the Ramganga......of course I asked which one was the better of the two and we chose to drive the 55 km to the Ramganga.

From the height of the road our guide pointed out some very large catfish and a crocodile that was sunning along the bank......the adventure was beginning already.

After several hours, his method finally paid off......he and I ventured to a different area of the river, just past some small rapids......he chummed and the fish quickly started hitting the surface. A few minutes later, I had hooked my first fish in over a year.....and my first fish in India.

Now that Dinesh had put us on the fish, it was Preston's turn to catch.....and he did....his first fish in Indian water.....but unlike some of our past fishing trips, this time, mine was the larger of the two caught in the day.

A visit to Amber Fort in Jaipur, or any of the historic places that form the landscape of India, should certainly have one wondering about what has taken place inside the many walls of such a monument.

The photograph of the Indian Lady whose job today is to keep the walkways clear and free of debris and trash......I caught her leaning against that wall with that lovely patina......and could not resist preserving the image. If not for the modern bucket at her feet, this photograph could have been taken over 100 years ago.

The final picture was much less serious......more lighthearted in nature.....and is probably a great way to end this chapter......the elephant with his trunk against the wall. While I am not sure that this is a repeat of times past.....

I, like hundreds of thousands of people who own a camera, have used it to capture pictures of family, friends, pets, vacations, before and after pictures of "you name it", graduations, first steps, new cars, accidents, etc. I have even taken my camera to the hardware store to aid me in describing a home repair issue I was trying to solve on my own. While it may seem like the camera was in use all the time, the reality was the opposite. It was a very common occurrence to have the following flurry of questions take place before any of the above events. "Have you seen the camera? Who used it last? Where could it be? What did we use it for last? Why isn't it with all of the other camera junk? What type of batteries does it take again? Where is the charger?"......you get the picture? (no pun intended).

This last and final picture still has me scratching my head trying to figure out if this is some special code....or perhaps it is a dental office run by "identical twins"......or it is a Dentist Office that caters to stutterers......Dr. Ag g g g arrwall, could you please fit me for my BR R R aces?" Maybe......it is that the temperature of the office is kept so cold that everyone is freezing....BRRRRRRRR it is cold in there....so cold the doctors decided that instead of purchasing a sign with the correct spellings, they spelled it like people are used to hearing them speak due to the freezing temperatures.......just look at this sign and see if you can figure it out.
